England left crushed by Israel’s winning goal in Jerusalem.

England’s Under-21 football team, already eliminated from the UEFA Under-21 Finals in Israel after losing their first two games, were beaten 1-0 by Israel in Jerusalem’s Teddy Kolleck stadium to be left bottom of their group having achieved no points and having scored just one goal in their three group games (and that goal was from the penalty spot).

Israel also finally went out having won one, drawn one and lost one, although it all could have been so different had they not conceded a last minute equaliser against Norway in their first game. England left the tournamount in disarray which doesn’t bode well for the future of England’s senior team.

Over 22,000 fans in Israel’s capital Jerusalem watched a first half in which both teams matched each other but with neither side being able to finish. However, Israel stepped up a gear towards the end of the game and struck the bar with a dipping shot from 30 yards out and then almost chipped the England goalkeeper who found himself stranded before Israel finally crashed the ball home with just ten minutes left to the delight of the home fans.

Here are Israel’s fans celebrating the winning goal:

  1. 1 – 0 is not really what I would call “crushed”.

  2. Seems like it was all a great success – another BDS FAIL!!!! Great to see watermelon eating in place of the usual drunken brawls reminiscent of football! So sorry my home country lost, but so happy the country of my soul did so well.

I was referring to in spirit as well as in result to be honest. I should have made that clear.

  4. Lovely post – but ‘crushed’?!

    • richardmillett

Crushed in spirit mainly. The teams were fairly matched but England looked despondent when they walked off the pitch at the end of the game.

  5. Tebbit Test, Richard. Have you taken it?

    • Tebbit told Woodrow Wyatt in 1991 that he did not think certain immigrant communities would assimilate “because some of them insist on sticking to their own culture, like the Muslims in Bradford and so forth, and they are extremely dangerous”.

I fail to see how this could apply to Mr Millet… But of course JoeM aka JoeMillis aka Nuha never assimilated in Israel.

      i wanted england.

    • I’m indigenous Brit and I wanted Israel. OK, make that indigenous Scot…

  6. And how embarrassing were stuart psycho pearce’s comments, blaming everything on his young players after each and every match. Hope he’s kept his hand in as a sparky.
